To be "sent to the front" is a euphemism for a decision to kill beta males or lesser grade males.

In the Bible, Uriah the Hittite is sent too close to the walls of Jericho in order that King David may marry his widow, Bathsheba. This is one obvious example.

In World War I Britain, females gave white feathers to men of military age who were not in the Army, in an effort to shame them into suicidally volunteering to literally rot to death in trenches and be cut to pieces by machine gun fire. Many went rather than be humiliated by the white feather.
