food security

Food security refers to safety of the food supply and access to safe and healthy food. This can mean a food supply that is protected against intentional or accidental contamination (such as mad cow disease, or bioterrorism, respectively) or easy and affordable access to organic food.

Position: Everyone should have access to affordable local organic food. Subsidize organic farming.

Arguments for:

  • Organic food is healthy and can reduce health problems, thus reducing the money needed for healthcare.
  • Access to pesticide-free food is a human right.

Arguments against:

  • Organic food is expensive, healthcare is already underfunded, so the money should go there instead.
  • The benefits of organic food are yet to be proven.
  • It's unclear how this could be provided without an unwieldy bureaucracy.
