Draggers or dragnet fishing gear drags a net along the bottom of the ocean, destroying everything it touches, especially fish nursery areas where young fish hide from predators among the complex bottom. Coldwater Atlantic coral is especially vulnerable and especially implicated in the collapse of the cod fishery. They also necessarily have a lot of by-catch which destroys fish not measured accurately.

A sustainable fishery requires use of long-liners instead of dragnets. Since at least the 1970s, inshore fishers have noted the reduced catch when draggers were in use offshore.
