To commit normally requires an official or binding utterance of a commit verb.

There are many implications to committing:
  • any withdrawal or refuting of the commitment requires that one negotiate it with those to whom outcomes have been promised
  • any possibility that the commitment may not be met requires that one notify all those who may rely on the outcome, so that they can intervene to make it possible
  • any agreement to pay or refund must be honoured, if the commitment is met
