Ontario general election, 2007

The Ontario general election, 2007 has been promised for October 2007: it is a fixed election date. In Canada only Ontario and BC have fixed election dates - which are only violated if a minority government is not able to retain the support required to pass budgets.

This election would be held under new rules approved in the Ontario electoral reform referendum, 2006, if it occurs and the electoral reform is approved. Else a referendum would be held simultaneously with the general election, and the new rules would not take effect until October 2011. Parties extremely disadvantaged by this such as the Green Party of Ontario are advocating an early electoral reform referendum for this reason.
