New Democratic Party of Canada

The New Democratic Party of Canada is the wing of the New Democratic Party that contests Canadian federal elections. Unlike every other Canadian federal party one cannot join the federal NDP without joining whichever provincial party runs in the province that one lives in.

The current leader of the NDP is Jack Layton, a former Toronto City Councillor, former President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, and author of two books.

The NDP is notable for maintaining friendly relations with leaders who retire, who often continue as MPs. The party's foreign affairs critic is Alexa McDonough. The party's advocate for electoral reform is formerleader Ed Broadbent.
