Municipal Governance

Municipal Governance in Canada is in a state of great flux. The municipality is the least empowered level of government, it often complains about deficient Federal-Municipal Relations and the inability to communicate directly with key agencies in a crisis, e.g. the SARS crisis.

Relevant platform proposals in this area include:

issue: The Liberal New Deal for Cities is ill-defined and could benefit from the above.

issue: Some provinces, notably Quebec as reflected by the Bloc Quebecois, consider any deeper federal-municipal contacts to be unconstitutional.

issue: Some consider First Nations Governance merely another form of Municipal Governance. Others consider this an affront to aboriginal rights.

issue: The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is focused on FCM infra standards
