Mary L. Landrieu

US Senator Mary L. Landrieu (D-La.) has been an outspoken critic of the Bush administration since Hurricane Katrina, and long has warned of disaster looming due to hurricanes on the US Gulf Coast.

She has fiercely defended local Louisiana and local New Orleans officials and put the blame squarely on Washington.

According to Los Angeles Times:Despite Warnings, Washington Failed to Fund Levee Projects, in 2005, with local levee and flood prevention officials, she "asked for $78 million in project funds. President Bush offered them less than half that - $30 million. Congress ended up authorizing $36.5 million. Since Bush took office in 2001, local experts and Landrieu have asked for just short of $500 million. Altogether, Bush in his yearly budgets asked for $166 million, and Congress approved about $250 million." The funds would have gone to shore up levees to handle at least category 4 hurricanes. They were designed only for a category 3.
