In the June 28th, 2004 federal election, the Martin Liberals were returned to government, despite fierce competition from the Conservative Party led by Stephen Harper. The Liberal Party was reduced from a majority to a minority government due in part to a scandal in which advertising agencies supporting the Liberal Party received grossly inflated commissions for their services. This scandal is well known as the sponsorship scandal. It continues to be very damaging to the party and threatens the Liberal's prospects of forming the government after the next federal election.
