In a modern economy, most people earn their income in the labour market. In that market, people achieve the highest income because they suceed in a competition to achieve the best education, the highest productivity, or simply work the hardest. Those who labour for their own company are self employment those who labour without getting paid at all are in the voluntary sector or domestic economy.
