An Issue Advocate is a (confirmed, likely or anticipated) candidate in the next Canadian federal election, e.g. 2005 who is the Green Party of Canada's best author, debater and speaker on a given topic.
Typically their titles/mandates correspond to Canadian federal Cabinet Minister roles but if the GPC proposes to change the structure of Cabinet, then the IAs will reflect proposed, not current, cabinet roles. Sometimes this amounts to trivial changes in name, e.g. Oceans and Fisheries not Fisheries and Oceans.

- be first to provide Answers to Questionnaires relevant to their issue focus, and share them quickly, see Answers to Questionnaires 2004 for examples.
- help other candidates and campaigners responding to citizen questions in their area, in a timely fashion, with no more than 48 hour turnaround.
- be available to other Platform 2005 Shadow Cabinet and Platform 2005 Co-Chairs and GPC Council at all times by phone during the election in case of emergency
- be ready to vet news releases on demand
The qualifications of an Issue Advocate are:
- competent researcher
- trusted by any GPC legislator who has worked in that area
- unfazed by trolls
- has advanced at least one plank through Platform 2005 Process
- etc.
