Grey seal hunt

Nova Scotia fishers have called for a Grey seal hunt to radically reduce the population of these in the North Atlantic. The Nova Scotia Fish Packers Association and other groups have called this an urgent matter, and called for a 50% controlled harvest. Denis Morrow, secretary-treasurer of the Grey Seal Research Association and of the NSFPA:
  • "everybody in the fishing industry, we have respect for every species... if that herd were reduced to 150,000 or 50% of what it is now, it would still be at an historical high level of the last 150 years."

The fishers have called for extreme controls on both the harvesting methods and habitat damage created so that there is no accusation of cruelty or degradation.
