debt relief for poor countries

Debt relief is the partial or total forgiveness of debt, or the slowing or stopping of debt growth, owed by individuals, corporations, or nations.

Position: It is unjust to force developing nations to make loan payments on money that was wasted or stolen by previous regimes; or the result of obligations from international financial institutions or corporations.

Position: Vigorously oppose IMF, WTO and World Bank reforms that devastate Third World economies

Position: Implement the Tobin Tax

Position: Provide minimum standards of democracy and accountability for future Canadian loans to developing countries.

Unfortunately, "DEBT RELIEF" really means taking your tax dollars and giving them to the big banks or institutions that allowed these countries to run up ruinous debts in the first place; and does not do anything to prevent current rulers from then maxing out their country's credit card all over again.
