Assumptions about causality come from many sources:
  • ideology - a belief tendency often shared by a faction built around it - defaulting to stupidity
  • hypothesis? - testable with some diagnostic? via the scientific method? making it ultimately possible to disprove? say with reference to a correlation matrix? or control group?
  • a mindset arising from common commitments, common action, or regret?s that one seeks to avert, e.g. as in the Precautionary Principle or satyagraha? - this need not imply any beliefs in common other than the risk aversion?.

A causal loop diagram is often used in debates around the latter two cases. Those who trust in ideology don't use 'em but prefer a command hierarchy of others as dumb as them.
