LP:designer

There are strict requirements for who can participate as an LP:designer. The web services that we, the Living Platform users need to support are work are not simple to understand and certainly not simple to master. A great many naming conventions and all control verbs must be well understood by someone who wants to contribute.

ethics

Just as there are many bottom-up details design must mesh with, there are top-down ethical constraints: our brand ethic and link ethics are part of what we offer to the public. This work is very fragile and easy to disrupt by giving the wrong impression. Our conceptual metaphors have encouraged and discouraged certain associations for a good reason. For instance, we don't use spatial metaphor unless we are talking about actual places - not doing so is to fail to respect that place matters? as it always does in politics. Another thing we avoid is use of words that imply that you are merely a guest, e.g. welcome. See New Troll point of view for more.

If you don't share sympathy for dissent?, a desire to make dissensus effective in politics, and other actual long term objectives of this project, you are unlikely to want to deal with the actual constraints of it. Many such constraints are detailed at LP:design, LP:control and most obviously at LP:layout. Please have a look at those pages and understand what's going on.

etiquette

Many people believe that how to wiki well implies a very high degree of tolerance for trolls, i.e. Crockers' Rules. Our administrator guidelines are similarly tolerant - Living Platform itself must be a troll-friendly process because of who participates - the same kind of people who talk about when it is right toassassinate?, or who is a baby-killer? and so on. If you believe you can discipline these people to be "nice" in a political debate?, you are wrong, PLEASE GO AWAY NOW. We must be realistic:

  • OUR USER INTERFACE IS GOING TO BE USED BY PEOPLE WHO ARE PERFORMING NECESSARY EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES, AND BY THOSE WHO CALL THEM BABY-KILLERS. OUR USER INTERFACE IS GOING TO BE USED BY PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE HUMAN LIFE IS SO VALUABLE THAT THE ENTIRE PLANET CAN BE SACRIFICED (BY THEM) TO SAVE ONE HUMAN LIFE, AND ALSO BY PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE THAT TO ASSASSINATE A FEW VIVISECTORS TO SAVE MANY MILLIONS OF ANIMALS IS ETHICALLY JUSTIFIABLE. THESE PEOPLE WILL *NOT* AGREE TO ONE CODE OF ETHICS, LET ALONE ONE ETIQUETTE. THEY WILL *NOT* BE "NICE" TO YOU. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO HELP US SERVE ALL THESE GROUPS TO NEGOTIATE, THEN, PLEASE GO AWAY

Crocker's Rules

Within the obvious limits of what is debated in politics itself, we are as nice to each other as possible. If you waste ECG master time, however, this is never rewarded. You will learn a lot by reading what they write. You will not feel good about your own judgement or skills at the end. If you want them to be nice to you, learn listen?ing, learn think?ing, learn logic?, defer explicitly?, and abandon your "common sense".

Then you may join the great evolution: Humans are obsolete?. In the Troll Age it becomes unfriendly AI? vs. we, trolls. LP:design must enable trollherds above all others, even funded troll?s.

OK, so I'm a troll, what now?

List yourself at known trolls. You must go public! Then pay attention.

An introductory version of what follows is at LP:design.

request and offer design

offer design?

''If you haven't designed for the Living Platform before, our brand ethic "this is what democracy looks like?" guides us very deeply in what we do.
means'' - LP:brand? explains this in more depth.
  1. If you don't want to actually help us make this look the way democracy feels, and don't want to learn what democracy requires of us, then, thanks for your interest, but, we don't want your help. You might find a role with OP:design instead.
  2. If you can live with the fact that you might have to learn open politics and learn Living Platform, then, great, check out what design projects are available below.
  3. Goto the page to learn the details of a project and edit in your name and email beside each project you are interested in.
  4. coordinate with GPC staff and other volunteers to plan the project
  5. Create an innovative, fantastic design! (no pressure)
  6. Update this page when you are finished, and celebrate.
P.S. Check out LP:designer_request? page to ensure all the questions you would like answered are there. Or, if you don't have time for a big design project, just upload some CC-by-sa works at LP:design_donated? that others can build on.

request design?

If this is the first design project you've requested, you too must read the brand ethic and realize what it means - the LP:brand? explains this in more depth.
  1. Create a project description page by following the structure set up by the Designer's Requirements page.
  2. Add your project link to the list below. Place it in priority sequence by checking the ideal completion dates of other projects.
  3. The link name should be four words maximum and include the type of project, what its for, and hoped for completion date. Examples include LP:wiki pamphlet by 2005-09-01?, LP:federal campaign web by 2005-05-01?. Make sure these are mentioned at more general LP:plan pages like OP:by 2005-09-01
  4. Designers will choose a project from the list to design, write their name and a completion date beside the link to the project description.
  5. Update this page when you are finished.
