Apology: In June of 2005, Wayne Crookes contacted Michael Pilling, the Chief Editor of OpenPolitics.ca, and it was determined that some contributors had made derogatory comments regarding Mr. Crookes, which are very much against the spirit and
terms of use of OpenPolitics.ca. We regret that in the process of providing an open and democratic political forum, certain individuals choose to denigrate or riducule rather than deliberate or inform, and that those derogatory remarks remained on the current version of the pages even for a short time.
Since the idea of
Open Politics is to create an alternative to the
rhetoric and
personal attacks that characterize
politics as usual. Upon being notified of the problem, steps were taken to promptly remove derogatory remarks or inflated accusations against Mr Crookes, without resorting to arbitrary censorship or the takedown of all pages which mentioned his political activites. In general readers of any material in OpenPolitics.ca should be advised against making any judgements of fact or character based on pages filled with anonymous contributions.
Wayne Crookes is a Vancouver, British Columbia businessman who runs a business called
West Coast Title Search. Since 1969 he has earned his living providing legal services to barristers and solicitors throughout British Columbia and elsewhere.
As of 2007
? Crookes appears to have no political role in any
Canadian federal political party. In the period from 2000 - 2006 Crookes played very important roles in the financing and managing of the
Green Party of Canada and to a lesser extent the Green Party of BC
?. During his tenure as party manager, the Green Party endured difficult period of infighting known as the
GPC Council Crisis.
Since 2004, Crookes has become publicly known for use of
libel suits against individuals who have commented on his role in the Green Party, and the forums, websites, and technology companies that hosted the comments.
political activites
Crookes became a
public figure in 2004 as the national GPC Campaign Manager
? in the
Canadian federal election, 2004. After the election he remained the lead figure in the party's management, as acting chair of the ERTC and chair of its successor, Management Committee. He remained in this role, and in the national campaign manager role, until he resigned immediately prior to the
Canadian federal election, 2006.
In 2004 and 2005 Crookes demanded apologies and removals of postings he deemed defamatory from public forums. He demanded that rabble.ca
? publisher
? Judy Rebick
? remove all references to his name or his involvement in the
Green Party of British Columbia from its forums. In 2005 he made similar demands of openpoltics.ca. He launched a libel suit against Jennifer Fisher-Bradley and her husband, following a controversy in which Fisher Bradley was dumped as a Green Party Candidate shortly before the 2004 election.
In 2006 he issued similar demands of pbwiki.com
?, which was hosting a wiki concerning the GPC's 2006 convention and candidates. He launched a suit against openpolitics.ca and some of its contributors.
Later, in 2006, he made demands of pbwiki.com
? to delete mentions of his name in another Green Party context.
In 2007, Crookes launched additional lawsuits against former GPC Council member
Kate Holloway, and who launched an email discussion group "gpc-members" the company that hosted it, Yahoo Inc. MySpace, PBWiki, and a number of volunteer moderators.
He also launched lawsuits against Wikipedia's Wikimedia Foundation, and Google Inc., concerning articles about himself and their associated page archives.
Crookes tactics were emulated by the GPC itself, which employed them during the
GPC whistleblower crisis, 2006 issuing legal demands and threats of lawsuits against former GPC employee Matthew Pollesel and former party chair, Gretchen Shwartz, who had made public accusations of wrongdoing by GPC officers.
[+] Green Party of Canada financial supporter and campaign manager
In the 2001 election year, the
Green Party of British Columbia "raised $247,104, with one contribution, from West Coast Title Search owner Wayne Crookes, totalling $83,545." -

His
Green Party of Canada numbers were very much lower, only two donations of $1075 and $450 are
listed officially for 2002
.
[+] GPC creditor
His involvement changed when
Jim Harris became
GPC Leader. Crookes and lent a large sum of money. He also served as national GPC Campaign Manager
? in the
Canadian federal election, 2004. After the election the party experienced a series of management troubles, which were characterized by
Murray Dobbin in the
Walrus
as an authoritarian takeover of the Green Party. As campaign manager during the election and party manager afterward, Crookes actions were central to the
GPC Council crisis.
[+] Feb 2005 - Crookes issues ultimatum to GPC federal Council - the "line in the sand"
One day before the shutdown of the
Green Party of Canada Living Platform on February 9th, 2005, an attempt was made by members of the Federal Council (the party's top decision making body) in a motion to assert its power to fire members of Crookes' ERCT and protect "
whistleblowers" - such as Head of Platform and Research
Michael Pilling from being dismissed. The motion for the upcoming meeting (Feb 21st) was ruled "out of order" by
GPC Party Chair Bruce Abel, who had apparently reversed his position of just two weeks earlier.
On the same day, Abel in an email titled "A line in the sand" and Crookes, both sent
emails to top level party officers claiming that the party was sliding into "anarchy" and that immediate deference to the ERCT's authority was required, even of sitting councillors who the ERCT in fact reported to. This was a fairly transparent demand to submit to a
single command hierarchy under Crookes himself.
In February, Crookes temporarily ceded the Chair to
Debbie Hartley, but observers claim that he remained in effective control of the party. This seems to have been correct: When the
GPC Shadow Cabinet called for the ERCT to be disbanded, it was simply renamed the "
GPC Management Committee" and
Crookes again took over its operations as explicit chair.
[+] Resignation prior to 2006 Federal Campaign
Wayne Crookes resigned from the Green Party shortly before the start of the 2006 federal campaign. He was replaced as GPC Campaign Manager by George Read
?, Leader
? of the Green Party of Alberta
?.The campaign was again re-organized in mid-December
