Bruce Abel is the GPC Party Chair, elected at the 2004 August convention. He presided over the GPC Council Crisis and was its primary cause and has repeatedly lied, including in public, about the events of that Crisis. See transgressions of GPC Council Chair. By refusing to face re-election at the GPC AGM 2006, he triggered the GPC constitution crisis, 2006, which as of 2006-02 has yet to be resolved. bias against consensus? Some claim that by defying the GPC Constitution to use Roberts Rules of Order? he is out of order as Chair and should resign immediately. This was only one however of many moves designed to facilitate a single command hierarchy within the Green Party of Canada and remove all power from the GPC Ombuds. conflictsAbel has taken specific positions against the GPC constitution and openly defied it many times, creating many conflicts. January 2005 conflictWhen GPC Fundraising Chair Kathryn Holloway objected to this and other abuse of process? in January 2005, GPC Leader Jim Harris conspired to remove her from her post, in a wholly unaccountable in camera process. Abel did not substantially object to many specific issues with this particular "decision" including permitting the in camera session to shift topics from a "staff problem" to removal of elected Councillor? with no notice nor ability for GPC Council members not in attendance to vote or state their views. Several members of GPC Council including Kevin Colton and ex officio member Tom Manley called for a staged process for any suspection of elected Councillor?s. So too the terms by which such Councillors may be accused of wrongdoing are up for debate. Abel has encouraged the use of the Living Platform to put all comments and facts on the record quickly. This page is part of that. These matters were also referred by several members to the Ombuds Committee. It was suggested that a responsible officer in a conflict of interest would have avoided any question of their facilitation of such questionable moves in a well-run organization. Whether Abel personally should bear the responsibliity for this was up to Ombuds to determine. It however did not ever rule on Abel's role in the issue, perhaps intimidated by his moves to remove its rulings from any effectiveness in the party. effectiveness on CouncilIn the longer term, Abel's seeming reluctance to apply any governance principles to activities of the ERCT, and later to the GPC Media Team and a total failure to perform fundamental constitutional responsibilities associated with his position, such as upholding the GPC Constitution, led to conflict with some members of GPC Council. Many resigned, after which Abel lied in public notably via a letter sent to The Walrus. They have been invited to edit this page and add the details which attribute correctly which claims to which people. This would seem to be more productive than asking Abel, or anyone, to resign. May 3,2006 Bruce Abel resigns in an email sent to : "I no longer have the desire, energy or motivation to be Chair. I resign immediately. If this surprises you, then it reconfirms my reasons for resigning. Thank you, Bruce" |
